For information about housing intended specifically for older people such
as sheltered housing, and accommodation for people with disabilities or other
special support needs, you should contact the Housing for Elderly Officer.
Sheltered housing tends to be built in a "scheme" or "court"
of between 20 and 40 flats or bungalows sometimes with a resident warden.
The service provided varies from scheme to scheme, and landlord.
The officer can also advise on grants to help make it easier for you to
stay in your own home such as rails, repairs or renovations.

If you own your own home (whether you still have to pay a mortgage or if
you own it outright), the housing grants system may be able to help you with
repairs or adaptations to your property. It
can help with small jobs like rotten windows, and large jobs, like a badly
damaged roof.
For further details
see the section on Repairs and Adaptations to your Home.
The City Council and Housing Associations provide rented housing.
For details about the type of housing available in the district, and how
to register for accommodation, contact the Housing Advice Centre (see previous
page)
If you are a tenant in housing other than council housing or housing
association property, and you have any questions or concerns about the property,
your landlord or your tenancy, contact the Private Housing Office

If you are a private tenant, it is an offence for your landlord to harass
or illegally evict you from the property. Should you feel threatened; staff from the Council’s
Private Housing Office (above) will help you and respond quickly to any
complaints. Lancaster City
Council’s Tenancy Relations Service will also help tenants who are
involved in disputes with private landlords. Help may also be available if the
gas, water or electricity to your property is disconnected because of the
landlord’s failure to pay bills for which he/she is responsible.

Systems and Gardening/Odd Jobs for information about other services

This is a registered charity which maintains a nationwide database of all
forms of private, voluntary and charity accommodation for older people -
retirement housing and Abbeyfield style accommodation, residential care and
nursing homes. EAC does not place
people or recommend establishments. It
provides computer print outs on types of accommodation in the area of choice and
within the price range requested by the enquirer.
The charity has information about homes which will accept people
suffering from dementia. EAC is
also able to provide advice on possible sources of top-up funding for those
needing help with fees in a home.
