  Crime Prevention

Crime Prevention Officers from the Police are available to give advice, free of charge, on any aspect of home security. Here are some of their most common tips:

·      Fit good quality locks to outside doors and use them.

·      Fit window locks to all ground-floor windows and those accessible from low roofs and drain pipes.

·      Fit a door chain and use it to check the identity of all callers to your door.

·      Door chains which can be locked and unlocked from the outside are available, so that you can go out leaving the door chain in place and get back in without someone having to come to the door.

·      Check callers’ identity cards carefully—remember if in doubt, keep them out. If you cannot read such a card, you can prearrange a password with the Electricity and Gas boards.

·      Keep your keys safe at all times.

·      Leave a light on when going out, preferably in the main room.

·      Cancel milk and paper deliveries when going away on holiday.

·      Never keep large amounts of cash in the house—put it in a bank or building society.
